This series features a 21-year-old Brazilian woman named Barbara who was convicted of kidnapping. After serving three years, her second sentence was over a few months early due to the overcrowding in Rio's prison system. I photographed her both in prison, and during her first days of freedom. After incarceration, domestic abuse and violence, she had a life to rebuild.
During her sentence, Barbara had started a complicated love affair with a woman named Michelle, who was convicted of an unrelated account of kidnapping. Michelle was on day release and had to return to prison each night. Because Barbara was on full release, they could meet during the day -- until she was thrown back into jail for the third time because she has only learned to survive through utilizing crime.
The sound file below was recorded by Jen Osborne. It is the voice of a female prisoner singing.
